Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is performed thousands of times each year on women who have lost one or more breasts. There are several approaches to breast reconstruction that vary according to the type of mastectomy and the condition of the breast skin.

If a woman's breast skin is loose and thick enough, reconstruction may be achieved through an implant or prosthesis. When there is not enough skin to accommodate an implant, additional skin is needed from another area. The donor skin is called a "flap" that consists of the skin, muscle and blood vessels sustaining the skin. At the time of surgery the nipple and areola (the darker skin around the nipple) may be reconstructed also.

If you're considering breast reconstruction, the process begins with the consultation. Dr. Bounds can help you decide whether your best result would be achieved at the time of mastectomy, or if you should delay the reconstruction. He will help formulate a plan personalized for you.

Is this right for me?
A Personal Decision

Every year thousands of women undergo successful breast reconstruction. The decision to pursue breast reconstruction is a very personal and important one. The factors that will affect your decision are unique to you. The following are before and after photographs of an individual that had two types of breast reconstruction following mastectomy. Shown is status post-simple skin sparing mastectomy on the right with implant reconstruction; and status post-left mastectomy with tram flap breast reconstruction.

Our experience and expertise can make this choice a little easier. You can find out if this is right for you by contacting our office for a consultation.

The Surgery Dr. Bounds and his Board Certified or Board Eligible Anesthesiologist have your safety and comfort in mind. You will be attended from the time of surgery until Dr. Bounds feels you are ready to go home with a family member or trusted close friend.

Typically, you should be able to return to work within seven days, depending on the level of activity required for your job. You should refrain from overhead lifting for a few weeks.
